TAVARES — Lake County's newest public transportation service, LakeXpress, will discontinue introductory fares after Friday, Aug. 17.
Riders can "flag" down a bus anywhere along the route by raising their hand and motioning to an approaching bus driver. The driver determines the most and convenient spot to allow passengers to board.
"I've been impressed by the quick and positive response to the LakeXpress service," said Ken Harley, Manager of the Lake County Public Transportation Division. "In less than three months much has been accomplished, including an average of nearly 600 daily passengers, but much more needs to be done to fully realize the potential of LakeXpress."
Sine July 18, LakeXpress has averaged more than 570 daily passengers with its highest ridership of 651 recorded on Aug. 10. The fixed-route service is designed to make daily commutes along U.S. Highway 441 hassle free. In years to come, the service will be expanded to other urban areas of the County, such as a downtown Mount Dora circulator route, scheduled to begin in 2008.
